The BCSA and Tata Steel held two Fire Engineering Seminars during June 2013 to educate architects and engineers in the principles and techniques that they need to know about fire-safe designs and to explain how these are applied in practice.

Leading fire engineering practitioners from the UK shared their knowledge and presented case studies. The Association for Specialist Fire Protection outlined their work in maintaining standards and supporting specifiers within the construction sector, and informative presentations by expert speakers from the BCSA helped to raise awareness on the most recent developments in the most cost-effective methods for designing buildings for fire.

Online versions of the CPD presentations are provided here.

These presentations were last reviewed in January 2021 and whilst they are beginning to become dated in some areas, they still contain much valuable background information and are retained here for that purpose.

Note:

  1. Since the Fire Engineering Seminars were held in June 2013, UKCA marking has been introduced for construction products in GB (England, Scotland and Wales), which is replacing CE marking (by 31 December 2021). CE marking remains relevant for construction products in the EU (including the Republic of Ireland), and special arrangements apply in Northern Ireland.

Note:

  1. Since the Fire Engineering Seminars were held in June 2013 the TSLAB software from SCI has been discontinued. However, alternative free fire calculation software is available called MACS+, which designs composite floor slabs at elevated temperatures by taking into account the enhancing effects of the membrane action in the slab.
